A routine hike at Glacier National Park took a frightening turn when a grizzly bear suddenly ran toward a group of hikers. One woman captured the encounter on video and later admitted that her reaction went against standard bear-safety advice. Despite the scare, no one was injured.
The woman and several other hikers were walking along a trail when a grizzly emerged from the woods and moved quickly in their direction. The sudden sight of the bear left the group with little time to process what was happening.
Video from the encounter shows the woman turning around after spotting the animal. She then ran in the opposite direction, even though running from a grizzly is generally considered unsafe.
In the caption, she joked about the situation, writing, “Almost didn’t make it to this birthday… ‘Go on a hike,’ they said. ‘It’ll be fun,’ they said… Life flashed before my eyes….”
She also added a humorous line about outrunning someone before clarifying that she would never actually do that. More importantly, she warned the other hikers about the bear as she moved away.
The Bear Had Another Target
The encounter looked more dangerous when viewed for the first time. However, reviewing the footage later revealed an important detail.
The grizzly was not actually charging the hikers. Instead, it was chasing a chipmunk. The small animal can be spotted in the footage, which helped explain why the bear suddenly moved toward the group.
That detail did not make the encounter any less frightening. A large wild animal running in a person’s direction can trigger an immediate fear response, especially when there is little time to understand what is happening.
The woman later admitted that the experience showed her how strongly she reacted under pressure. In another caption, she wrote, “Still, learned a VERY valuable lesson: I desperately need to work on my flight response.”
A Frightening Lesson
The incident ended without injuries, but it gave the hikers a memorable reminder about wildlife encounters. The woman described it as a “10/10 experience” while adding, “Would NOT recommend.”
The video shows how quickly a peaceful hike can become stressful when wildlife appears nearby. It also highlights why understanding animal behavior and following established safety guidance matters when hiking in bear country.
Although the grizzly’s sudden movement caused panic, the group made it through the encounter safely. The bear continued after the chipmunk, and no hikers were harmed.
The footage later provided a clearer picture of what had happened, turning a terrifying moment into a lesson about staying calm and understanding wildlife behavior.
