‘90210’ Star Jennie Garth Shares Dark Truth About Life After Stardom

Fame often looks glamorous from the outside, yet the reality behind it can feel overwhelming and isolating. Jennie Garth, best known for her role as Kelly Taylor in the iconic series “Beverly Hills, 90210,” recently shared a deeply personal account of what life looked like after the cameras stopped rolling.

Her reflections offer a candid look at early stardom, personal struggles, and the long road toward stability.

At just 18 years old, Garth stepped into the spotlight when “Beverly Hills, 90210” premiered in 1990. The show quickly became a cultural sensation, running for a full decade until 2000. With global attention came pressure that few teenagers could handle.

“It happened so fast, and I was not equipped for just a regular life at that time, let alone that kind of fame and notoriety across the world,” she recalled. “It was like the Beatles, and there was no preparation for it.”

The sudden rise brought constant public attention. As a result, Garth developed anxiety and began withdrawing from everyday interactions. Avoiding eye contact became a coping mechanism, which gradually led to isolation.

The Hidden Impact of Fame

Garth’s memoir, “I Choose Me: Chasing Joy, Finding Purpose & Embracing Reinvention,” set for release on April 14, explores how fame shaped her identity and decisions.

“My whole life has been sort of things just coming at me,” she shared. “Fame, marriage, divorce, marriage, divorce, children… It’s always been happening, and I’ve just been swimming and trying to keep up and really doing the best I could do.”

The constant scrutiny also affected how she viewed herself. Over time, she became highly critical of her appearance. This led to restricted eating habits and eventually breast implant surgery, decisions she now reflects on with honesty.

On-Set Tensions and Real-Life Struggles

Behind the scenes, relationships among cast members were not always smooth. Garth’s on-screen dynamic with Shannen Doherty, who played Brenda Walsh, extended into real life.

“The whole world pitted us against one another,” Garth explained. “I just realized how terrible it was to put us in that position, and nobody was guiding us.”

The lack of emotional support during that time added to the tension. “Nobody was getting therapy then,” she said. “Nobody was talking to us about things. We were both just fending for ourselves.”

Despite conflicts, she acknowledged the value of those relationships. “Even though at times it was complicated, it was still really good,” she added.

Her connection with co-star Luke Perry also blurred emotional boundaries. Playing love interests created confusion between fiction and reality.

“It really was confusing,” she admitted. “It really got a little blurry at times… I got caught up in it, and I allowed myself to think that it was real.”

Although the romance remained on-screen, the two developed a lasting friendship.

Balancing Motherhood and Career

During the show’s run, Garth experienced major life changes. She divorced her first husband, Daniel Clark, in 1996. A year later, she welcomed her first daughter, Luca, with actor Peter Facinelli.

Motherhood shifted her priorities. Time on set often revolved around caring for her child.

“I had a baby, and it really did sort of separate me from the rest of the group because every second that I had to myself, I would run back to the trailer and be with my baby,” she shared.

After the show ended, Garth married Facinelli. The couple had two more daughters, Lola in 2002 and Fiona in 2006. However, their 17-year relationship ended in 2012, marking another difficult chapter.

Following her divorce, Garth faced one of the lowest moments of her life. She revealed that mixing alcohol and pills led to a medical emergency that required her stomach to be pumped.

This incident became a turning point. She chose to seek help and checked into a luxury rehab center, Canyon Ranch. Since then, she has maintained sobriety and focused on rebuilding her life.

Love, Loss, and Personal Growth

In 2014, Garth met Dave Abrams on a blind date. The relationship moved quickly, leading to marriage in July 2015. Still, the couple faced challenges, including IVF struggles and miscarriages.

In 2018, Garth learned through TMZ that Abrams had filed for divorce, a moment that added emotional strain.

“I really wanted to give Dave a baby because he was young and all of his friends were having kids,” she said. “I just thought that’s what he needed.”

Her reflection highlighted a deeper realization about people-pleasing. “It all comes down to people-pleasing. Once you really get to the core of what you want for your life, that’s when everything seems to get easier.”

The couple reconciled in 2019 and chose to move forward together, ultimately deciding not to expand their family further.

Jennie Garth’s journey after “Beverly Hills, 90210” reveals the complex reality behind fame. Early success brought challenges that affected her mental health, relationships, and self-image. Over time, personal setbacks pushed her toward meaningful change.

Her story reflects persistence, self-awareness, and the importance of making choices that align with personal well-being. Through her memoir and recent interviews, Garth presents a clear message: growth often comes through difficult moments, and clarity follows when priorities shift toward what truly matters.
