Dog Waste Concerns Grow in Western Isles, Council Issues Warning

Outdoors
May 6, 2026

Concerns are rising across the Western Isles as local authorities report a steady increase in dog fouling, particularly in spaces meant for children. A small garden in Stornoway’s Goathill Crescent, often used by nursery groups for outdoor learning, has become a key example of the issue.

The situation has drawn strong reactions from both officials and families who rely on these spaces for safe, everyday use.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has confirmed repeated incidents of dog mess in the Goathill Crescent area. While most dog owners act responsibly, officials say a small number are causing widespread frustration. Reports have been coming in from across the islands, pointing to a pattern that is becoming harder to ignore.

Frances Murray, chairwoman of the council’s community safety board, addressed the issue directly. She stated, “It is extremely concerning to receive reports of dog fouling in areas used by nursery children.” The presence of waste in these environments raises hygiene concerns and creates stress for both staff and parents.

She added, “This behaviour is irresponsible and puts children's health at risk,” highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

To address the growing problem, the council plans to increase patrols, focusing on areas with frequent complaints. The message remains clear: shared spaces require shared responsibility.

Failure to clean up after a dog can result in a fixed penalty notice of £80. If unpaid within 28 days, the fine increases to £100. These measures aim to encourage better compliance and protect community spaces.

The Western Isles face a preventable issue that depends largely on public behavior. Cleaner, safer environments can be maintained when pet owners follow simple responsibilities. As Frances Murray noted, everyone must “play their part” to keep these communities welcoming and safe for all.
