How much caffeine could kill you?

August 15, 2022

If you are a coffee aficionado, then you would also be aware of the fact that excessive caffeine consumption can be fatal. Read on to know more about how much caffeine you could safely consume in a day, without it being a threat to your health and physical well-being.

There are a number of factors that could make it tricky to find an answer to the caffeine question since caffeine affects the human body differently for each person. If a person is habitual of caffeine consumption, they can build a tolerance to it and so it would affect them differently than a person who is an occasional coffee drinker.

There haven't been many concrete studies that can give a definite answer to the caffeine fatality problem, but it is known that the highest caffeine dose ingested by a person who survived was approximately 100 grams. That is the amount of caffeine present in around 1200 mugs of coffee!

Lesser doses of caffeine, merely around 5-10 grams too, could put a person at risk of a fatality. Ingesting 10 grams of caffeine through coffee or cold drinks may seem like a lot of cups and bottles but it is easily reachable through diet pills that have extremely high caffeine content.

Two incidents that are noteworthy here include the caffeine ingestion by a one-year-old girl who thankfully survived it but had seizures and heart complications right after the incident. The other incident involved a 16-year-old boy who also ingested 6-8 grams of caffeine and survived. Of course, there were immediate heart issues and seizures resulting as an aftermath of the caffeine ingestion, but luckily, the young boy survived.

As is evident by the studies and the recorded incidents, a number of factors are at play when a large dose of caffeine is ingested, and it is almost impossible to die from drinking too much coffee or energy drinks. However, people who are already suffering from high blood pressure, heart complications, or seizures must be very careful in their caffeine consumption.

According to health practitioners, it is best to keep your caffeine consumption under 500-600mg in a sible day, not because it could prove fatal for you, but because more caffeine than that could do more harm than good if taken on a daily basis.
